Since it was first held in 1996 the assistance and cooperation of a great many people have helped to firmly establish the Miyazaki International Music Festival as the main musical event in Miyazaki's spring calendar.
This year the festival will be dedicated to the memory of Isaac Stern - a driving force behind the growth of this music festival - who passed away in September of 2001. In addition to performances by his son, Michael Stern, and musicians who have performed with and studied under the late maestro, there will be a photographic exhibition of this beloved musician.
In 2002, the 7th Miyazaki International Music Festival welcomes Vladimir Ashkenazy (conducting, piano), the Julliard String Quartet, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Michael Stern (conducting), and Jian Wang (cello). They will join other fine musicians from around the world to bring the delights of classical music to audiences at the Miyazaki Prefectural Arts Center concert hall and other venues.
Starting this year, the festival enters a new phase as, instead of being known as a chamber music festival, it will now be called the 'Miyazaki International Music Festival' in recognition of its continuing growth.
